Act IV

Why does young Lucius run from Lavinia? Is he uncomfortable with the state she is experiencing?

  1. He runs from Lavinia because he had a book in his hand wich was a similar story of a woman getting raped and mutilate, so by showing Titus and Marcus the story she wanted to show them what had happened to her.

  2. Young Lucius is simply afraid of his sister. Lavinia is unable to speak and makes sounds that are frightening. According to Marie Rutkoski's article "Arm the Minds of Infants" the scene in which young Lucius runs away from Lavinia has a symbolic meaning. It refers back to the pit in the woods. Lavinia's tongueless mouth makes wordless sounds that resemble the sounds of the dark creatures in the pit. The pit can symbolize a lot of things, but according to Rutkoski in this scene it symbolizes Tamora. Tamora is a frightening creature, and I think that young Lucius sees Tamora's evilness in his sister.

  3. Good answer, Poly.
Sirkku, this is a wonderful analysis which draws on your research for the paper. Very nice. Just a quick note on the relationship between Young Lucius and Lavinia; she is his aunt, not sister.
