Act 1 by Shakespeare

Do you think it is fair for Saturnius and Bassianius to jump over Marcus to take on the position he is holding while Titus is at war? Wouldn't it be more justified if Marcus was the one fighting for the position?Explain your reasoning.

  1. Interesting question. But think about who Saturninus and Bassianus are? Why do they have a claim to the throne of Rome? Titus, as you mention, is a war hero and some people see him as a candidate for the throne. But why would people elect Marcus?

  2. I think that Saturninus and Bassianus wants Marcus to turn against his brother Titus. Probably they want him to eliminate Titus because he is the one closest to him.

  3. I don't recall any lines which would support this theory. Can you identify where you've seen Saturninus or Bassianus intimate that this is what they want to happen?
