"Night Thoughts" by Helen Simpson

This short story Night thoughts by Helen Simpson is more realistic with the fact that today in our society women having more options as far as careers and lifestyles go. The point of view given by the character Dave portrays characteristics the would commonly be related to the perspective of that of a woman. My question is does Dave's current state of masculinity result in the pleasure Dave's wife Ella is feeding off of? And also is it simply Dave's lack of self confidence/esteem that hinders him from being in a state of happiness with his marriage and family and not necessarily his wife Ella's state of power?
