Effective, Focused Body Paragraph

An effective, focused body paragraph should:
-contain a topic sentence(main idea which is the focus of that paragraph)
- focus on ONE idea supporting the thesis of the paper
-support and illustrate the main ideas with examples, quotes and subsequent discussion of these
- be sufficiently developed, or every supporting point and example/quote should be explained
*a transition or transitional sentence should open the following paragraph to show the readers how the two paragraphs relate to each other.

Sample Body Paragraph:
         When you first look at the American and Dave, similarity is the last thing that comes to mind,
but both men have certain qualities of masculinity. When the American is sitting at the train station
and speaking with the girl he has a very masculine tone, The man says “I know you wouldn’t mind
it, Jig. It’s really not anything. It’s just to let the air in” (Hemingway 212). This shows confidence and
a sense of responsibility. This same responsibility is also shown by Dave when he is thinking
through the things he needs to get done. Simpson writes “[...] as well as doing boring but
necessary things like sort out the boiler and take Daisy to the dentist and get his marking done
before midnight” (Simpson 117). Family errands may not seem manly, but getting things done
whether happy about it or not is in fact a very masculine trait to be had. Both men show this quality
of masculinity.
             Both men also show their masculinity in different aspects as well. The American shows the
more negative side of being masculine when he says “I think it’s the best thing to do. But I don’t
want you to do it if you don’t really want to” (Hemingway 213).
