Directions: Read the first two pages of Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” and respond to ONE of the questions below in a well-developed and organized essay. Effective characterization is often considered an essential quality of good literature. How effective is the portrayal of masculinity presented by the man in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”? In other words, is the man in “Hills Like White Elephants” an adequate representative/example of a masculine man?
The narrative voice in a piece of literature determines the perspective through which readers are given access to the story. Does the narrative voice employed in
Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” seem to be biased and as a result are we, the readers, more likely to sympathize with the man or the girl? Explain.
The setting in literature often complements the relationship between the characters and sets the atmosphere for the events. Does the setting (place, time, and weather) in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” help us, the readers, to better understand the relationship between the man and the girl? How?
